Hosseini uses imagery to help the reader get a better sense of life during wartime and the effects of the attacks. He uses words such as "rattling" and "whining" to express the sounds that a person living through wartime would hear. He also uses words such "shook" "flakes of plaster rained" to express the images a person living through wartime would see. The war has been going on for so long that these occurrences become normal to Laila.
