Khaled Hosseini uses symbolism by referring to the bombs that are dropped in Afghanistan as "the whistling". This is a social issue because the people of Afghanistan live in fear during this time period. The whistling of the bombs occurs as the bombs are about to fall. The anticipation of whether the bomb would fall on their house or another's creates a dread feeling within the people. The anticipation of whether this bomb would be the one to end their life is what the people must live through during this time period. "The whistling" represents the bombs that create fear in the daily lives of Afghans.
